[Review] Who stood out in Miss Universe 2016 Preliminary Evening Gown?

Miss Universe 2016 preliminary competition took place on 26th January in Manila, Philippines. The 86 contestants competed in Swimsuit & Evening gowns. The scores of both the rounds alongside prelim interview will determine the semifinalists of this year’s pageant. This year the quality of gowns is extremely high we just loved how the contestants ditched the pageant patty gowns and went for more couture looks.

Before we reveal our top choices, here is a special shout out to the outgoing Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach who looked out of the world in 2 stunning Michael Cinco gowns. Pia crown her successor on 30th January at Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay, Manila.

Selecting yellow gowns is a smart move as it helps the contestants stand out and the color pops out against a dark background. We saw three stunning yellow creations during Miss Universe 2016 evening gown presentation Miss Cayman Islands, Monyque Brooks wore a beautiful laced gown with a train. We loved her styling especially her short spiked hair. Miss France, Iris Mittenaere who is currently a hot favourite to win stunned everyone in this gorgeous piece she channelized her inner Hollywood diva with side swept soft curls. Miss Myanmar,Htet Htet Htun wore a sexy yellow sheer of shoulder gown with floral appliques the neckline looked bit risqué but she rocked the stage.

We love to see couture or couture-worthy gowns on pageant stage and we were blessed to see so many of them during the preliminaries. Miss Brazil, Raissa Santana wore an off-shoulder sheath gown that featured intricate detailing the gown featured around 34,000 crystals. Miss India, Roshmitha Harimurthy was simply sensational in her custom made Swapnil Shinde gown the berry red full sleeved gown created the right amount of drama. Miss Indonesia, Kezia Warouw had an oops moment when her gown stuck on a nail during the prelims but one can’t deny that she looked like a top Indonesian actress walking down the red carpet of a major international film festival. Miss Thailand, Chalita Suansane wore an Organza column gown with a black tulle overskirt. She finished off her look with a bun and some jewellery. Miss Ukraine, Alena Spodynyuk was clearly the star of the night in this Ziad Nakad red ball gown she was simply flawless.

Miss Aruba, Charlene Leslie was the biggest revelation of the night as she wore a stunning white strapless column gown that fitted her like a glove. If she manages to make it to the top 12, she will go far in the competition. Miss Dominican Republic, Rosalba Garcías wore a tulle based lace gown that featured a sheer neck paneling like Miss Aruba she was simply sensational in this round. Miss Philippines, Maxine Medina chose the color emerald because emerald is her birth stone & she feels connected to it. This fringe dress could have fallen flat on others but Maxine worked the hell out of this gown. Our only complaint is that she should have gone for a much sleek pair of shoes other than that her styling was on point. Miss Venezuela,Mariam Habach when she first entered the stage I was like girl! is she wearing her NC minus the props for evening gown? Then when she came closer I was like why did she rapped herself in layers of frou-frou fabric but when she removed her ugly overskirt beneath it lied one of the most intricate & beautiful gown to have graced the Miss Universe stage. Miss Vietnam, Đặng Thị Lệ Hằng, we bet very few noticed Miss Vietnam because she came immediately after Miss Venezuela’s epic performance but one can’t deny how chic and stunning she looked in this silver mermaid style gown.
