Miss India 1999 enters Politics…!!!

Miss India 1999, Gul Panag, shall contest for Aam Aadmi Party in Chandigarh. Gul’s father, Lt. Gen (Retd.) H S Panag, is one of the founding members of the Aam Aadmi Party.

It is to be noted that Gul represented Indian in Miss Universe 1999, where she stood sixth overall. She is still remembered for her interview in the finale, where she was asked by the host, “What is that one thing you can do in Mexico but not in India?” and she replied, ” Driving on the right hand side of the road?”. Her witty answer pulled her on to the top place in this segment of the competition and she scored the highest in interview beating 9 other finalists. After her stint at Miss Universe, she entered bollywood where she got critics appraisal for her role in movie ‘Dor’, struggling to free her innocent husband from Jail.
Gul Panag replaced Savita Bhatti, wife of Late Mr. Jaspal Bhatti, who previously was running for the poll. However, Savita had to withdraw in last moment and hence Gul got the ticket to contest for AAP. Gul also commented,”Chandigarh is my home. I was born and brought up in Chandigarh. Like you, I also want an atmosphere of clean politics. That is why I have joined this. It is my humble request to all of you to become a member of this movement.” Gul is expected to take on former union minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, a three-term Congress heavyweight, whose candidature has reportedly been cleared by the Congress election committee. The elections shall be starting from April 7. It would be interesting to see whether the touch of glamour shall help AAP to rise or not.
