New Zealand has been participating since the inception of the Miss Earth pageant, with exception of 2002.  However, not a single contestant from the country has bagged a placement.  Even in Miss World, New Zealand is not doing particularly well.  The last high placement of the country in the pageant was 1st Runner-up in Miss World 1997 where Lauralee Martinovich finished second to Diana Hayden.  The last major success of the country in Miss Universe was achieved by Lorraine Downes who won Miss Universe 1983.  Will Abby Sturgin become the first Kiwi beauty to place in Miss Earth?
