Miss Universe 2016: An irrelevant question sabotaged Miss Kenya’s chance to win the crown?

Miss Universe 2016 concluded by crowning Iris Mittenaere of France as the winner. Although the choice was of winner was universally acceptable by fans what hit us the question received during her Top 6 Interview. By this time, she was one of the hot favourite and was touted as one to reach Top 3 easily. While other 5 delegates got relatively common knowledge question, Miss Kenya got a question relating to US Politics and that too a question that requires a sensible amount of time to think upon. Her question was,

“Arguably no US president has had a more active 10 days in office. What are you most excited about and what concerns you when it comes to the Presidency of Donald Trump?”

Miss Kenya replied: “Politics … ahh OK let me just start again. Donald Trump, having been elected as the President of the United States, may not have been the choice of many people living in the United States because of the divided support system for the outgoing President Barack Obama, who has supporting an upcoming woman President … who was supposed to be a woman President Hillary Clinton. So, so many people oppose his position. But I feel that once [Trump] took up his position, he was able to unify the entire nation.”

It was very clear that she didn’t have much idea about politics, even if she had, she wasn’t well versed. We feel it is unfair to ask a delegate from African region about American Politics, which she might not have studied well in detail. Yes, it would have been fair if this was asked in Miss USA or Miss America but Miss Universe is a global contest or if the same question was asked to all the girls. It should be more about finding a girl who speaks from heart and with confidence rather than a girl who has good general knowledge on current affairs of region specific.

What do you feel? Do you think asking a region specific question to a contestant is valid?

  1. This is actually a very dumb question to ask someone from a different continent. She struggled a bit to answer it. But I guess if she was given a fair question to answer, she would have won miss Universe

  2. I agree 100% the question was way out of Miss Kenya’s league especially politics from another continent whereas her country or even continent Africa would have been more acceptable in this regard.
African delegates always seem to pull on the short end of the STICK and it’s so sad to notice this every year.
