The Real Gem of Miss World 2016: Evelyn Thungu, Miss World Kenya

Every pageant has that one girl who comes out of nowhere but ends up winning hearts of fans once and forever by the time finale is concluded. Miss World 2016 had Miss World Kenya, Evelyn Thungu who fits perfectly into this category. What makes her even more interesting is that Evelyn wasn’t the real winner of Miss World Kenya 2016 contest. Roshanara Ebrahim was the actual winner of the contest and Miss Thungu was a runner-up to her. However, due to breach of contract, Roshanara was stripped of her title and Evelyn was appointed to represent her country at Miss World 2016. Now this was not something noteworthy as generally we have seen many time runner-up getting appointed to represent due to one or the other reason. Hence, nobody took a note of her crowning and people ignored it.

Generally it is very rare to see a designated candidate doing very well at Miss World 2016 and hence people generally have tendency to ignore such delegates. Evelyn Thungu had to face the same situation as the fan didn’t take much note of her. But this 22 year old stunner wasn’t going to stop. She was determined and focused of what she wanted. The major surprise came when we heard that Kenya was one of the Top 5 in Top Model Round. People were stunned to see this 5’11” tall beauty and understood the reason why she made so high in Top Model round. Later on it was revealed that she is also one of the Top 5 finalist of Beauty with A Purpose. By this time it was very clear that Miss World organisation just love this girl and her efforts.

Coming to the finale night, we saw Miss Kenya in stunning red meshed gown during beauty with a purpose result revelation and we must say that she literally ate everyone alive with her stunning aura. It wasn’t a difficult task to note her striking presence on the stage. She was so captivating that you could keep watching her again and again yet you can’t get enough of her. It was so pleasantly surprising to see her making to the Top 5. She was asked, ” What can you do to improve education in the world?” by Miss World 1988, Linda Petursdottir, to which she replied:

“Obviously, it begins with empowering every child to understand that education is important, and Nelson Mandela said that it is the weapon that a child can use to face the future. So first let’s educate our parents that education is important and then we shall have all children on board to achieve their dreams.”

The depth of this answer was so appreciated that many, at this point, thought that she might just grab the crown of Miss World 2016. Although she didn’t win the contest but she won hearts of people. She was also given the title of Continental Queen of Africa after the show. What Evelyn Thungu did at Miss World has set example for not only just girls from Kenya but across whole globe that nothing can stop you from achieving what you want if you have a firm determination and a belief in yourself. We should also appreciate Miss Kenya organisation who gave their full support to Evelyn and help her succeed in the contest.
