Miss World 2014: 5 Best Black Beauties of the pageant

– Article by Shashank Nair

Talk about ‘black’ and most of us will attribute a whole of things negative to it. Yet, black is something we just can’t ignore.

As Amy Grant has put it – Without black, no color has any depth. But if you mix black with everything, suddenly there’s shadow – no, not just shadow, but fullness. You’ve got to be willing to mix black into your palette if you want to create something that’s real.

If it wasn’t for black everything would have been pale and ‘just so white’. Black brings color and color brings mirth and mirth results in countless smiles, giggles, laughter and celebration.

So given that ‘black’ is a thing not to be ignored. And since Miss World season is around the corner, here’s my take on 5 ‘Black Beauties’ or #BB’s of #MW14

I reviewed the long list of stunning beauties competing for the Miss World title this year and very judiciously chose a list of top 5 #BB’s who according to me will rule to roost in this year’s pageant.

Given below are my views on each girl.

At rank 5 is the goddess from Guatemala – Keyla Lisbeth BERMÚDEZ NUÑEZ

This 22 year old Beauty Queen, isn’t exactly black, her flawless skin tone is more bronze/chocolatey .  It’s not merely her skin tone that draws you to her. I find her eyes very captivating not to mention her full lips (very kissable 🙂 ). This girl if plays her cards will can give Guatemala its 3rd ever placement in the Miss World Pageant (the other 2 placements have been in year 2011 and 2012 since Guatemala’s debut in 1976)

At Rank 4 is the smiling beauty from Gabon – Jessie MATHAS LEKERY

Again with her flawless skin and captivating smile, she is sure to capture a lot of attention at Miss World. Gabon is a newbie to the pageant world and her weak sash shouldn’t prevent her from making the cut if she plays her cards well.

Hope she gives Gabon it’s first ever MW placement

At Rank 3 is the demure beauty from Tanzania – Happiness WATIMANYWA

She isn’t a typical African beauty with strong features; rather her facial features are well defined. I would say her biggest asset is her eyes and a petite frame. I would place her in the league of her predecessor in 2005, Nancy Sumari (MW 2005 one of top 5 finalists)

I would be great to see Happiness across all Tanzanian faces once Happiness makes a cut at the contest. Fingers crossed

At rank 2 is the leggy lass  from Namibia – Brumhilda OCHS

Her chiseled features and straight hair (unlike many African delegates, who have to use extensions/wigs instead) will definitely get noticed at Miss World. She has the looks but she needs to project a stronger personality to win the heart of the judges and I can easily see her entering the top 5. Namibia has indeed sent a winner material this year. Big thumbs up for Brumhilda.

Namibia has been in the pageant scene since 1980. Their first delegate to Miss World was Michelle Mclean who got placed in top 5 in MW 1991. After that there was a long streak of non placements/nonparticipation. The only 2 placements Namibia has secured are in 2006 and 2009 where the delegates placed in top 17 and top 25 respectively.

It will be interesting to see how she places this year in MW

At Rank 1 and my ultimate Black Beauty for this year’s MW is this true goddess from Ethiopia – Yirgalem Hadish ADHANOM

For me, her beauty has a mysterious charm. Her dark almond shaped eyes and glistening brown skin are her best assets. It is no wonder that most of the predictions for MW 2014 carry her name in top 15 list. For me she is the best #BB this year to represent African region.

Ethiopian beauties have always come across as shy and reserved. Given her looks, and if she can be more fierce in her performance, I feel there will be no stopping for this girl.

Ethiopia has entered MW only since 2009 and has always been in controversy for all wrong reasons. Hope Yirgalem will try her best to secure her placement and give the pageant community in Ethiopia a much needed ray of hope.

Cheers! 🙂
